EVENT

African Food Systems Transformation Collective inception meetings

Date: August 8, 2023
Time: 1 August, 14:00-16:00; 8 August, 10:00-12:00
Venue: Zoom

African food systems contribute to climate change, yet are also vulnerable to its impacts. Climate change is just one of multiple crises converging on African food systems, including biodiversity loss, soil degradation, rapid urbanisation, and value-chain concentration.
Across the continent, transition to sustainable, resilient and just food systems is essential to mitigate and adapt to climate change and other social and ecological crises. However, funding to promote agroecological transition is inadequate and poorly-coordinated.
To inform more coherent and evidence-based funding strategies for food systems transition, the African Climate Foundation, in partnership with the the DSI-NRF Centre of Excellence in Food Security (CoE-FS) and the UNESCO Chair in African Food Systems (held by CoE-FS director Professor Julian May), is convening a collective on African food systems transformation: the African Food Systems Transformation Collective.
You can download a brochure here to read more about the proposed collective.

Our GOALS

We recognise that producers, processors, distributors and consumers are incorporated into the food system under varying terms and returns. We also recognise the economic, social, human and environmental health impacts associated with food security. Therefore our goal is to conduct research, build capacity and disseminate findings that will promote a sustainable food system in South Africa.

Our MISSION

Our research is concerned with the scale, nature, causes and consequences of food insecurity in South Africa and elsewhere on the African continent. Thus our mission is to investigate products, technologies, processes and policies that can reduce food insecurity and mitigate its negative outcomes. We seek to make a difference to food security by linking innovative science with critical enquiry.
