Professor Marshall Keyster, a project lead with the DSI-NRF Centre of Excellence in Food Security (CoE-FS), was recently recognised for excellence in research.
At the University of the Western Cape’s (UWC) 2023 Research Recognition Awards, Professor Keyster won the award for “Research Excellence: Best Mid-Career Researcher 2022″. The awards, which are hosted annually by UWC’s Research and Innovation, are a “celebration, not only of the nominees’ and winners’ individual achievements but also of the global impact of their work”, according to Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor José Frantz.
Keyster leads the CoE-FS’s project ‘Reclamation of Heavy Metal Contamination of Soils’, which is housed within Programme 2 of the centre, “Innovation and Technology”. The purpose of the project is to analyse soil for nutrient status; physical, chemical and biological properties; and microbial diversity before and during cultivation of the crops, to assess its soil health status.
Keyster is based within UWC’s Faculty of Natural Sciences.
