The 2016 Autumn International Scientific Conference on Food Security and Safety was held from 16 - 18 May at the School of Tourism and Hospitality, University of Johannesburg

The Conference was aimed at providing opportunity and bring together researchers and stakeholders from all over the world to present their research findings, and business activities and development programmes on food security and safety.

The conference theme was: Improving Food Security and Safety for Sustainability in Africa

Food Security and Safety Conference Organizers: The University of Johannesburg in collaborations with the Human Sciences Research Council and Department of Science and Technology, South Africa.

The transition in the concept of Food Security from the 1950s till date has been strategic and inclusive towards ensuring sustainable access and availability of safe and nutritious foods

The conference also comprised five sub-themes covering key issues relevant in the area of Food Security and Safety

Conference Sub-theme 2: Public policy on food safety and security – The constitutional right to sufficient food; Blue economy safety; Food safety and security policies; Government/public spending policy and trends; Policy application and coherence strategies/implications; Food safety economics, etc.

Food Safety implies “the absence of, or acceptable and safe levels of contaminants, adulterants, naturally occurring toxins or any other substance that make food injurious to health on an acute or chronic basis"

Conference Sub-theme 5: Impact of climate change on agriculture – harvesting methods; linkage to population health; mycotoxin infection prevalence on agricultural feeds; socio-economic disadvantages; Early warning systems for food security and safety; Risk modelling to evaluate impact of climate change; Agriculture climate prediction and performance.

Students also got a chance to present their areas of research related to food security and safety
