With food prices increasing sharply during the lockdown and no end in sight for the rising levels of hunger, civil society activism and the protection of human rights is more important than ever.

In South Africa, with a large population of poor – especially black – women, the impact of the pandemic has been felt even more acutely.

Our webinar, taking place on 1 September 2020 at 13h00, delves into the coping strategies adopted by South African communities during the national lockdown, looking specifically at how access [to] and choices about food during the pandemic, reflect persistent social and economic inequalities in South African society.

Panellists:

  • Bongiwe Ndondo, Executive Director at Hlanganisa
  • Vivienne Mentor-Lalu, Researcher/Facilitator for the Women and Democracy Initiative at the Dullah Omar Institute
  • Sivuyiswe Wonci, Lecturer at Nelson Mandela University
Presenters will also share insights on gender equality and human rights, both of which are important issues in discourses about food security, nutrition and livelihoods. Dr Mary Hames, Director of the Gender Equity Unit at the University of the Western Cape will serve as moderator for this webinar.

Our GOALS

We recognise that producers, processors, distributors and consumers are incorporated into the food system under varying terms and returns. We also recognise the economic, social, human and environmental health impacts associated with food security. Therefore our goal is to conduct research, build capacity and disseminate findings that will promote a sustainable food system in South Africa.

Our MISSION

Our research is concerned with the scale, nature, causes and consequences of food insecurity in South Africa and elsewhere on the African continent. Thus our mission is to investigate products, technologies, processes and policies that can reduce food insecurity and mitigate its negative outcomes. We seek to make a difference to food security by linking innovative science with critical enquiry.
