FSNet-Africa, the DSI-NRF Centre of Excellence in Food Security, and the Department of Anthropology and Archaeology at the University of Pretoria invite you to a #FoodTalks seminar on the impact of Covid-19 on Food Systems in Africa. The inputs in this webinar are based on an IDRC-supported three-country (South Africa, Ghana and Tanzania) study of the impacts of Covid-19 regulations on the political economy of food systems in Africa. Join us in unpacking this important topic – from the impact on farmers to market and street traders and others – and discussing the implications for our food systems going forward.

Speakers will be:

  • Akosua Darkwah, an associate professor and Head of Department of Sociology at the University of Ghana;
  • Marc Wegerif, a lecturer in Development Studies at the University of Pretoria, South Africa; and
  • Colleta Gandidzanwa, a postdoctoral fellow with the Food Systems Research Network for Africa (FSNet-Africa) at the University of Pretoria.

About #FoodTalks
Food talks to us at many levels, touching on important aspects of our lives and society. These dialogues will be a space to talk about the current food system and how we can move to a socially and ecologically regenerative, just and nourishing food system in Africa.

Our GOALS

We recognise that producers, processors, distributors and consumers are incorporated into the food system under varying terms and returns. We also recognise the economic, social, human and environmental health impacts associated with food security. Therefore our goal is to conduct research, build capacity and disseminate findings that will promote a sustainable food system in South Africa.

Our MISSION

Our research is concerned with the scale, nature, causes and consequences of food insecurity in South Africa and elsewhere on the African continent. Thus our mission is to investigate products, technologies, processes and policies that can reduce food insecurity and mitigate its negative outcomes. We seek to make a difference to food security by linking innovative science with critical enquiry.
