World Food Safety Day: From Burden to Solutions — Safe Food Everywhere

Date: June 5, 2026
Time: 09h00 - 13h30 (SAST)
Venue: Hybrid: Zoom / Forestry and Agricultural Biotechnology Institute (FABI) Auditorium, Ring Rd, Hillcrest, Pretoria

The DSTI-NRF Centre of Excellence in Food Security (CoE-FS) Food Safety group will host a hybrid engagement on Friday, 5 June 2026, to mark World Food Safety Day 2026 under the global theme, “From burden to solutions – safe food everywhere”.

The engagement, led by CoE-FS Co-director and Food Safety lead Professor Lise Korsten, will bring together researchers, policymakers, industry stakeholders, civil society representatives, students, and members of the public to reflect on current and emerging food safety challenges and solutions in South Africa and beyond.

Taking place at the FABI Auditorium in Pretoria from 09h00 to 13h30, the programme will feature keynote reflections, panel discussions, audience engagement, and networking opportunities focused on the role of science, collaboration, and innovation in advancing safer and more resilient food systems.

The event will also showcase poster presentations by CoE-FS grantees and emerging researchers, providing attendees with an opportunity to engage directly with current food safety research and interdisciplinary scholarship during the networking sessions.

As food systems continue to face pressures linked to climate change, inequality, public health risks, and supply chain disruptions, the engagement aims to strengthen dialogue across sectors and contribute to collaborative, evidence-based approaches to food safety.

The event will be hosted in a hybrid format, with limited in-person attendance.

Our GOALS

We recognise that producers, processors, distributors and consumers are incorporated into the food system under varying terms and returns. We also recognise the economic, social, human and environmental health impacts associated with food security. Therefore our goal is to conduct research, build capacity and disseminate findings that will promote a sustainable food system in South Africa.

Our MISSION

Our research is concerned with the scale, nature, causes and consequences of food insecurity in South Africa and elsewhere on the African continent. Thus our mission is to investigate products, technologies, processes and policies that can reduce food insecurity and mitigate its negative outcomes. We seek to make a difference to food security by linking innovative science with critical enquiry.
