The Centre for the Advancement of Scholarship (CAS) invite you to a #foodtalks seminar on Creating a more equitable, just and democratic food system, with Dr Tracy Ledger (PARI) and Dr Lindiwe Sibanda (CAS). This is organised in collaboration with the DST-NRF Centre of Excellence in Food Security, the Centre for the Study of Governance Innovation (GovInn), and the Human Economy Programme within CAS.

Farm workers are an integral component of the economy and the food system in South Africa. Yet they are invariably poor, food insecure, marginalised and vulnerable to exploitation. Pro-farm worker legislation since 1994 has provided some protection, but it has also been associated with violations of labour rights and an accelerating pace of evictions and casualisation. Moreover, because agricultural employment is concentrated at specific times of year, seasonal farm workers face an under-reported crisis of underemployment and seasonal hunger.

The University of the Western Cape’s Institute for Social Development and the DST-NRF Centre of Excellence in Food Security invite you to a distinguished lecture presented by Nicole Paganini, research fellow at the Centre for Rural Development at Humboldt University in Berlin, and PhD student at Hohenheim University, Institute of Social Science in Agriculture, Societal Transition and Agriculture.

The Food Safety research group of the DST-NRF Centre of Excellence in Food Security from the University of Pretoria, will take to the stage during the 4th Science Forum South Africa from 12 – 14 December 2018 at the CSIR International Convention Centre, Pretoria.

The DST-NRF Centre of Excellence in Food Security and the Agricultural Research Council invite you to a distinguished lecture presented by Prof Louise Fresco, President of Wageningen University and Research (WUR).
