COVID-19 lockdown regulations have caused severe disruptions to South Africa’s food system. The informal food sector in South Africa includes spaza shops, street traders and hawkers. Around 70% of households in poorer neighbourhoods source food from the informal sector.

The International Symposium on Soybean Development for Sustainable Agriculture in Africa, will bring together researchers from around the world to advocate for the importance of soybean development in Africa.

The Symposium will be held at the University of the Western Cape in South Africa from 31 March – 1 April 2020.

The Symposium is jointly organised by the RGC- AoE Center for Genomic Studies on Plant Environment Interaction, The Chinese University of Hong Kong and the DSI-NRF Centre of Excellence in Food Security, University of the Western Cape

the DST-NRF Centre of Excellence in Food Security, the Centre for the Study of Governance Innovation (GovInn), and the Human Economy Programme within CAS.

The Advocacy Meeting is a continuation of a series of meetings, which the Dullah Omar Institute has organised in response to an urgent need to address food insecurity in tertiary institutions nationwide. The Advocacy Meeting seeks to mobilise a coalition of stakeholders in preparation for the implementation phase of the Access to Food for Students Project.
